During the \u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eFirst Anglo-Ashanti War\u003c\/span\u003e, he served in West Africa and was present at the \u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eBattle of Dodowa\u003c\/span\u003e on \u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e7 August 1826\u003c\/span\u003e, one of the decisive British victories of the campaign against the Ashanti Kingdom. The battle secured British and allied control of the region and remains one of the defining engagements of the war. Following his African service, Young served with the \u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e78th (Highland) Regiment of Foot\u003c\/span\u003e, the \u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e19th Regiment of Foot\u003c\/span\u003e, and later the \u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e48th (Northamptonshire) Regiment of Foot\u003c\/span\u003e, the regiment identified in the inscription to this watercolour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003ePainted during the opening months of the Crimean War, the work records the routine of a Victorian garrison rather than the drama of the battlefield. Viewed in that context, this watercolour records the regiment during the final months of routine garrison life before its departure for one of the defining campaigns of the Victorian British Army.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003eCarlisle Castle, founded in the late eleventh century by William II, had remained an important military stronghold for centuries and continued to serve as an active barracks throughout the nineteenth century.
