A rare early 19th century mahogany travelling chest from a 'Phaeton' carriage of excellent colour.
A scarce example of a travelling chest made to fit under the seat of a 'Phaeton' which was a type of carriage, usually pulled by two horses, and which was popular at the end of the 19th century. The chest has a brass plaque to the top inscribed 'Phaeton Seat'. The chest has been in a private collection for the last twenty years, and prior to the it came from a very grand hose in London Regent's Park. Often rooms would be set aside just for the household luggage and travelling trunks and the chest was likely marked 'phaeton seat' as it was purpose made to fit under the seat and the servants wouldn't want it being mixed up with other chests and luggage. It is rare to find such a good example with a brass plate marking its purpose.
The chest would have slid underneath the seat of the phaeton and retains its original campaign style handle and lock. The chest is in entirely original condition.
