A 19th c Deed box in the name of Sir George Edward Pocock, Baronet
A 19th century metal deed box in the original paint that once held the papers of Sir George Edward Poccock (1792-1866) Baronet and former Member of Parliament for Bridgwater in Somerset. Pocock was the grandson of Admiral Pocock. The Pocock Baronetcy, of Hart in the County Palatine of Durham and of Twickenham in the County of Middlesex, was a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 18 August 1821 for George Pocock, Member of Parliament for Bridgwater. He was the son of Admiral Sir George Pocock. The title became extinct on the death of the 4th Baronet in 1921. Pocock entered the house of Parliament as an MP on 27th May 1796 and left on 7th March 1820.
Sir George Edward Pocock was born at Charles Street, Berkeley Square, London in 1792, the son of Sir George Pocock, 1st baronet. In 1830 he married Augusta Elinor, the eldest daughter of the Hon. Thomas William Coventry, of North Cray Place, Kent. He succeeded his father as 2nd baronet in 1840. He died at his seat, the Priory, Christchurch, Hampshire (now Dorset) in 1866. He was succeeded by his eldest son, George Francis Coventry Pocock. He had served as a Major in the 30th Regiment of Foot.
The paint is original and worn but the lettering is delightfully timeworn.
