A delightful ink and watercolour primitive study of a ship, probably the nicest in the medium we have seen in quite some years.   The ship depicted appears to be a man of war, described (top left) as a vessel of the first rank.   The name of the ship, ‘Numa pompilius primus Rex Romulus’ refers to the first and second kings of Rome.

The study is the original frame with delightfully rippled 19th century glass.

The back indicates that this was owned in 1891 by Caroline Cuminal Michel and suggests this was painted by ——— Jean Cuminal born in 1792 and who died in September 1850.  The handwriting is difficult to read.

The untouched condition of the painting images for a rather special piece.
