George III Sheraton design chair c. 1790
Once belonging to Sir Frederick Ashton, choregrapher and former director of the Royal Ballet, this late 18th century chair oozes charm and character. The lovely time worn paint with floral design is early but not the very original 18th century paint which peeps out from beneath the 19th century decoration - the very original having been white with pink roses. There are old repairs to the Georgian chair - perhaps indicating it was an old favourite as it has been saved for future generations to enjoy. The chair has been sat near a large fireplace as the paint finish to the splat has that 'fireside' patina. A truly lovely late 18th century chair.
