There are any number of oil on canvas and gouaches of ships leaving the bay of Naples but few naive school studies in this medium, and even fewer with such charm.   The artist in a naive hand, in the true traditions of British folk art, depicts such details at the crew on deck - including the captain - in his  distinctive bicorn hat, whilst seagulls  swoop through the sky.    Other details, such as the ship's figurehead, are particulalrly delightful.  The ship is portrayed as it leaves harbour on 13th June 1844.   The study remains in its original frame with original 19th century glass.   Whilst there has been some water damage over the last 156 or so years the colours remain vibrant and utterly charming.

A rather nice example of British folk art

Frame: 52 cm x 43 cm

British, 1844
