"Chosen by Charlie" - a piece selected by young Charlie Hall.

A fine early hand-forged wrought iron lock key of robust, practical form, retaining its original oval bow, solid cylindrical shank and substantial rectangular solid bit with a rolled terminal. Entirely forged by hand, the key displays the subtle irregularities, hammer marks and rich surface texture characteristic of early blacksmith-made ironwork.

The solid bit, with its broad rectangular profile and rolled outer edge, differs from the open pierced construction of  warded keys.   The key has survived with an excellent untouched surface and deep, naturally developed patina accumulated over centuries of use.

Keys of this type were made for domestic and architectural locks during the late Tudor and early Stuart periods, serving on doors, cupboards, chests and other secure furnishings. The substantial proportions, heavy forging and pleasing simplicity of design make this an especially attractive example.

A genuine early wrought iron key with excellent colour, honest wear and strong decorative appeal.
