Before they were known as Magistrates Courts, the courts that deal with criminal matters below Crown Court level, were known as 'Police Courts'.   This rare surviving enamel sign from the 1930s would have adorned the door of such a court.  These courts were often adjoined - or were - next to police stations, sometimes even having a passageway between the two where remanded prisoners were led for their first appearance.
