19th c provincial portrait of a lady & original cane
A rather delightful oil on canvas portrait of a seated elderly lady holding a cane. Unusually, and indeed very rarely seen, the original cane portrayed in the painting has stayed together with the protrait all its life. The cane is delifghtully worn at the top where she would have held it.
In the background a vase of roses droop and wilt, the petals falling onto the table.
The face of the subject is well executed for a provincial portrait and tells of a life begun in the time of George III in the 18 the century.
There is a label verso "Arthur Hel**** Roach' and a Chrsitie's stencil suggesting it passed through their salerooms at some point in its life.
Measuring: Portrait - 36" x 28". Cane 40" long
