19th century bicycle shop desk from a Morgan’s cycle shop, Saltney, Cheshire
A short while ago, back in 2014, Morgan’s cycle shop in Curzon Street, Saltney was celebrating its 100th anniversary. In fact the local newspaper at the time described how the 84 year old owner, Terry Morgan at the time, said the shop was unchanged for over 50 years and described stepping inside as going into a time warp. The business had been started in the early 20th century by the owner’s uncle, Bill Morgan. Terry’s father had then taken over the business when Bill went off to fight in the First World War. At the time the business was in Boughton, Chester and the business was moved to Saltney. Sadly the shop is now closed but the interior of the shop was captured, with Terry Morgan inside, in 2016 by photographer Ian Southerin of Location Photography and the desk we now have for sale can be seen in the background to the right of Terry Morgan’s arm as he stands proudly behind the shop counter (Link below).
The shop desk, dating to the late 19th century, retains its original time worn paint and is wonderfully original. Some of the handles have been replaced over the years through years of use in the shop, although some are the original ones. We have left the original shop labels on the drawers although these could be easily removed.
There is a small loss to the moulding at the front left and historic damage to the top right door, perhaps when the drawer has been forced when someone lost the key.
A wonderfully original shop desk that has been in the Morgan’s business for many many years having only just been removed from the shop when it closed.
