Late 18th Century Painted George III Armchair with unusual block feet

A late 18th-century George III painted open armchair, retaining its worn black surface with particularly attractive wear through prolonged use. The shield-shaped back centred by a pierced splat, above a generously proportioned seat and elegant  arms.

The chair is raised on square tapering legs, terminating in unusual stepped block feet — a distinctive and robust provincial, possibly Irish-influenced interpretation of the standard neo-classical spade foot. This subtle but important variation gives the chair a stronger stance and clear individuality, reflecting the practical craftsmanship of regional workshops working from pattern-book designs.

The surface is a particular strength, with consistent age and handling wear revealing the warm underlying tones beneath the worn paint, especially to the arms and edges. The seat is upholstered in dark velvet, later but in keeping.

A characterful and honest example of late 18th-century vernacular design, combining classical influence with regional interpretation.

Measuring: height to seat 47 cm, width 58 cm, height to back 103 cm, depth 49 cm

English or Irish, c.1780
