A late 17th century oak boarded chest of small proportions, standing on shaped end boards and constructed in oak with pegged joints.  The chest retains period hinges to base, although the top pins appear to have been replaced during its working life. The large riveted iron lock plate is an old replacement, while one of spandrels may be later.  . There is a split to wood, which suggested unseasoned wood was used, and this would have appeared very early in the life of the chest and visible to the first owner.  The top board has bowed so the chest creaks as it opens, although the opening is restricted somewhat and the extent it opens can be seeing the photos.

The ogee shaped end boards give the chest its distinctive profile, while the front, sides and lid are formed from oak planks secured with a combination of pegs and some nails

Boarded chests such as this were an essential item of household furniture during the seventeenth century, providing secure storage for clothing, linens and other possessions. Their simple construction and practical purpose make them among the most enduring forms of English vernacular furniture.
