A mid 19th century naive school oil on board of a surgeon.   The subject holds a book and shows a skull in the background, often used  in the 19th century to demonstrate the surgeon’s profession in portraits.    The board is marked to the reverse with the stencil of art material suppliers George Rownety and co, 51 Rathbone Place, London  in a form used 1832 to 1844.

The portrait remains in is what is most likely the original frame. Losses to the frame bottom and bottom right and on area of paint loss bottom right.  The portrait has been cleaned and varnished at some point in its life.
